


Community Strengths
Scott County is a peaceful, rural area with friendly, happy people. Churches of all denominations are readily available. Civic and fraternal organizations are active and provide for the needs of the children. There are Scout Troops, youth groups, and a county-operated recreational league offering numerous team sports in addition to the sports offered through our county schools.
Scott County enjoys one of the lowest crime rates in Virginia and abundant evidence of community volunteerism is obvious. Scott County is free of the pressure, traffic, and noise of larger urban areas, but is within easy driving range of numerous cultural, recreational, and shopping centers.
The Scott County School System is one of the most progressive in the region and enjoys the support of county parents, civic organizations, businesses, etc. The county's approximate 4,000 students are served in 3 high schools, 1 vocational center, 7 primary schools, and 2 middle schools which are geographically situated to be convenient to parents and students. School buildings are modern and contain the latest of education technology.
Academics are strongly emphasized and a number of honor courses are available, as well as Remedial, Special Education, and Alternative Education programs for those students requiring these services.
For those students desiring to enter the world of work after high school, Scott County offers a wide variety of vocational training programs, both at their high schools and the Scott County Vocational Center.
Employment Opportunities
The county's geographic location which is near the industrial powers of the Tri-Cities Metropolitan Statistical Area contributes to one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state.
Health Facilities
Health care is readily available throughout Scott County. Private physicians, medical clinics, and hospitals are easily accessible and reflect the latest in medical services. Emergency services are available to Scott County through it's network of strategically located fire and rescue facilites.
Higher Education
Institutions of higher education available in the area include 3 community colleges, 2 4-year collegs (Clinch Valley College and East Tennessee State University). Many other institutions of higher learning, King College, Virginia Intermont, Milligan College, Lincoln Memorial University, and Emory & Henry, to mention a few are located nearby. Off-campus classes for University of Virginia and University of Tennessee also offer many courses.
Recreation Opportunities
Scott County is blessed with abundant natural beauty. It's mountains and streams are largely undisturbed and provide countless hours of recreational opportunities. Throughout the county, scenic and historic areas have been preserved and developed for the enjoyment of the people. Natural Tunnel State Park is the largest such area featuring many hiking trails, picnicking, and camping , as well as an amphitheater and swimming pool. Golfing and tennis are available at the Scott County Park. Scott County boasts about its two recreational facilities, which offer a combined total of 7 lighted tennis courts, walking trails, softball/t-ball fields, sand volleyball courts, playground area, and basketball courts. One of the recreational facilities is located at Weber City and has received state and national awards. The other one is located at Duffield and opened in October, 1996.
