Wood Poppy is a member of the Papaveraceae Family. The Wood Poppy is very rare in Scott County and is ranked S2 by the Virginia Natural Heritage Program.
The S2 ranking means that there are from five to twenty occurrences in this area. It has a G5 Global ranking which means that it is common in other parts of its range.
The image of the Wood Poppy on this page came from a wooded slope near the Holston River. Wood Poppies begin blooming in mid-April and continues into May.
It has one of the longest blooming period of any of our local wildflowers. The Greek species name means two-leaved
and refers to the pair of opposite leaves below the flower. It is sometimes referred to as the Celandine Poppy.
