Nagel, former Director of the Virginia 2 CONC Historical Association and and author several historical books, one 2 CONC THE LEE'S OF VIRGINIA. This information came from that book. 2 CONT The story of Richard Lee, the founder in Virginia, glows with 2 CONC success. His achievement was the sort many residents of 2 CONC seventeenth-century England uearned to du[;ocate. They peered across 2 CONC the Atlantic drawn by hopes for wealth and eminence said to be found 2 CONC along the James River. Of course, there were other colonists whose 2 CONC careers are too easily ingored. For some, Virginia was a last hope, 2 CONC and outlet for desperation, while many had nto even a choice in the 2 CONC matter. They often arrived in chains with no future except to toll 2 CONC for their betters. But of those who came freely carrying abmbition. 2 CONC talent and industryfew who survived the New World's rigors had the 2 CONC good luck that transformed Richard Lee from a Britisher of modest 2 CONC beginnings into a Virginia of hoghest standing. 2 CONT Not until recently has the extent of Richard's triumph been 2 CONC uncovered. Lee family tradition had long insisted that Richard could 2 CONC clain and illustrious background. But the story arose from myth 2 CONC rather than genealogy, since the emigrant himself left, no information 2 CONC about who his parents were. Furthermore, generations of Lees did not 2 CONC know even the mane of Richard''s spouce, Anne Cinstable, let alone 2 CONC anything about her. 2 CONT According to a legend Richard helped to foster, he was from 2 CONC Shropshire, a county bordeting Wales and located about one hundred 2 CONC niles northwest of London. In the seventeenth century the area had 2 CONC several Lee families, two of whom used the arms of Reuner de Lega or 2 CONC de Le', a Norman prominent around 1200. From these lines Richard was 2 CONC alleged to have descented and his birthplace to have been Coton Hall 2 CONC in manor of Nordley Regis, although thos who wove the story could 2 CONC never offer a convincing date for Richards's birth. 2 CONT Family tradition goes on to tell of a Gilbert Lee, sad to be 2 CONC Richard;s uncle, who left Shropshire for London, where he prospered 2 CONC as a sea captian and then as a nerchant. This Gilbert Lee cied 2 CONC childless sometime after 1621, leaving his considerable estate to a 2 CONC nephew, John Lee, who carried on the business. John is supposed tto 2 CONC have brought his counsin Richard down from Shrophire to learn the ways 2 CONC of London. With this experience, Richard presumably sailed for 2 CONC Virginia. 2 CONT While it may have gratified earlier Lees' thus to believe that 2 CONC the family founder grew up genteel surroundings on a manor in 2 CONC Shropshire, there is no evidence to authenticat this tradition. 2 CONC Instead, thhe recent identification of Richard's parents show that he 2 CONC was from Worcestershire. 1 SOUR @S2@ 2 PAGE Vol.1 2 #2 Page 7 1 BIRT 2 PLAC Worchestershire, England 1 DEAT 2 DATE FEB 1630 2 PLAC England 1 FAMS @F132@ 0 @I449@ INDI 1 NAME Jane /Hancock/ 2 GIVN Jane 2 SURN Hancock 1 SEX F 1 SOUR @S2@ 2 PAGE Vol.1 2 #2 Page 7 1 BIRT 2 PLAC England 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1639 2 PLAC England 1 FAMS @F132@ 0 @I451@ INDI 1 NAME John /Lee/ 2 GIVN John 2 SURN Lee 1 SEX M 1 SOUR @S2@ 2 PAGE Vol.1 2 #2 Page 7 1 BIRT 2 DATE SEP 1616 2 PLAC Worchestershire, England 1 DEAT 2 PLAC England 1 FAMC @F131@ 0 @I452@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas /Lee/ 2 NPFX e 2 GIVN Thomas 2 SURN Lee 1 SEX M 1 SOUR @S2@ 2 PAGE Vol.1 2 #2 Page 7 1 FAMC @F131@ 0 @I453@ INDI 1 NAME John /Lee/ 2 GIVN John 2 SURN Lee 1 SEX M 1 SOUR @S2@ 2 PAGE Vol.1 2 #2 Page 7 1 BIRT 2 DATE SEP 1616 2 PLAC Worchestershire, England 1 DEAT 2 PLAC England 1 FAMC @F132@ 0 @I454@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas /Lee/ 2 GIVN Thomas 2 SURN Lee 1 SEX M 1 SOUR @S2@ 2 PAGE Vol.1 2 #2 Page 7 1 FAMC @F132@ 0 @I455@ INDI 1 NAME James Dallard /Arnett/ 2 GIVN James Dallard 2 SURN Arnett 1 SEX M 1 NOTE Dallard lived all his life in Lee Co. Almost all we know about him and hs family is taken 2 CONC fom the Service and Pension files of the National Archives. Sarah 2 CONC and James "Certification of Marriage" was filed by James Farmer 2 CONC Movember 19, 1851. Afterwards Sarah had to prove her marriage through 2 CONC depositions. A major problem was that James Clarkston was not listed 2 CONC on the muster roll. James Clarkston's military papers are listed 2 CONC under the name of James Claxton.
