216. James CLARKSON
(16)(35) was born between 1775
and 1780. He died on Feb 11 1815 in Mobile, Alabama. James Clarkston was a
soldier in the "War with Great Britain"(War of 1812). Beginning Dec.
13, 1814, he served with Captain John Brock's Fourth Regiment of the East Tennessee
Militia. James Clarkson died February 11, 1815. Almost all we know about him
and hs family is taken fom the Service and Pension files of the National Archives.
The pwnsion file is voluminous, containing thirty-nine pages.
Tracing the James Clarkston family proved to be very diffocult. Many of
the early census records for east Tennessee were lost. Sarah and James "Certification
of Marriage" was filed by James Farmer Movember 19, 1851. Afterwards Sarah
had to prove her marriage through depositions. A major problem was that James
Clarkston was not listed on the muster roll. James Clarkston's military papers
are listed under the name of James Claxton. A deposition in 1851,from Tandy Welch
and Foster Jones states that the Clardsons name was "sometimes called and
written as Claxton" The speiing are interchangable, and should be noted
as such in all records, furtermore, Tandy Welch and Foster Jones stated they
were with James Clarkson when he died, and that "he James) belonged to the
said company and regiment.to which we did and that each of us have applied under
the Act of 28, Sept. 1850.
According to a deposition Sarah made for a bounty land warrant her "name
before her marriage was Sarah Cook." They were married Oct. 10, 1799(she
later made a depsition in her eighties saying she married in Oct.1808 in Russell
County VA by John Tate, a Justice of the Peace. The earlier date seems more likely
as the birth of Fairwix Clarkson the oldest son was in 1800 in Virginia. By
1804 the family was living on the Powell River in what is now Hancock County.
Beginning Dec. 13, 1814, James Clarkson was mustered into service at Knoxville,
TN for a term of six months. He died at Fort Dacater on about the 20th of February
1815 because of a illness. Sarah filed and recieved widow's benefits' of $4.00
a month, a soldiers half pay. to continue for a period of five years.
Aug. 11, 1817 Sarah was appionted administrater of the estate of James Clarkson
and the east was settled May 11, 1818. In 1834, Sarah purchased 100 acres from
"heir at law" James Clarkston ;i.e. their children: Fairwix, <ajala,
Elizabeth, Susanna, Rebecca, andMartha. Mary (Polly) and Henry were suprisingly
not included in the deed. Henry was probably still living with his mother, but
Polly had been married to Tandy Welch for awhile.
In the 1850's Congress passed several acts benefiting military survivors.and
widows. It was during this period that Sarah Clarkson obtainied a grant of the
40acres, however, she filed a depsition in March of 1854 claiming she was entitled
to 80 acres, The 40 ares was cancelled in a copy of the cancelled scertification
is in the pebsion file and the 80 acres grant was approved. Sarah also recieved
a widow's pension of $3.00 per month but under a Act of Congress of February
4, 1862, her petition was suspended due to the war wth the Confederacy. As TN
was in the Confederacy was in the Confederacy, all pensions payments in the stat
were stopped.
After the war had ended, Fairwix Clarson applied for restoration and arrears
of payment on September 25, 1866. He filed as tje administrator of the estat
of Sarah Clarkson, who died on December 21, 1863 "at his home on the Jonesville
RD.." On Mar. 14, 1868 he gave a oathe of loyaty(even though his sons served
in Union Army) and vouched for Sarah loyaty. He stated tat Sarah remained loyal
to the United States during the previous war and in this deposition , he attested
as to the loyalty of her heirs to wit"
